Forgot a word you studied? Check what to practise next
Use abandon, absorb, and adapt to check meaning, spelling, and sentence use, then choose a concrete task for your next review.
A word looking familiar and being able to explain it without the answer are different results. Before reviewing it again, check which part you cannot yet do.
Check the meaning without the answer
These examples come from Mocavoca’s CET-4 core wordbook. Say or write the meaning before looking at this table.

Record a specific result, such as “could not explain absorb” or “knew adapt but misspelled it.” Seeing the word before does not answer this check.
Put the word back into a sentence
Plants absorb water through their roots.
Explain who takes in what, then explain what “through their roots” adds. If you know the definition of absorb but cannot explain the sentence, practise the sentence too.
Cats quickly adapt to a quiet room.
Notice adapt to. Next time, check both the meaning and how the sentence introduces what the cats adapt to.
Match the task to the error
- Cannot recall the meaning: hide the definition, explain the word, then compare.
- Cannot spell it: write it from a meaning prompt, then identify the letters you missed.
- Know the word but not the sentence: identify the subject, action, and object before explaining the whole sentence.
- Cannot recognise the sound: listen to the card, try to identify or write the word, then check the text.
Keep this record on paper or alongside the app’s mistake records. A correct meaning-choice answer does not show that you have also completed a spelling or listening task.
Start the next review with the previous error
Repeat the task you could not do last time. Compare actual answers: can you now explain the meaning, spell the word, or explain its sentence? Then continue with the day’s new words and reviews.
